The Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is an initiative of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island that has been helping Islanders discover the importance of forests by setting an example of stewardship and sustainability for over 20 years.
With our assistance, tens of thousands of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and ferns have left our nursery and been planted across the Island, restoring lost seed sources, improving diversity and creating homes for wildlife. We’ve started restoring hundreds of acres of forest and our educational activities continue to grow in popularity. More than ever, people appreciate the beauty that is around us and the potential of our woodlands to provide wildlife habitat, places of recreation and a wide variety of natural products.
Careful financial management has allowed us to accomplish a great deal on a small budget. Your support will make a difference. Our children’s program is overflowing and requires better equipment, everything from bird books to microscopes. The native plant nursery continues to collect and propagate some of the rarest plants in the province, and is an integral part of our teaching efforts. The 2,000 acres of public forest land we manage for the province is becoming an increasingly important component of our restoration work.
Organic Farm proposed for Macphail Homestead

Macphail HomesteadThe Friends of the Macphail Homestead are looking at a plan to implement an organic farm on the grounds of the homestead. Sounds like a good idea and hope they are successful.
The Friends of the Macphail Homestead on P.E.I. are developing a plan for an organic farm on the site that would double as a research centre.
Earlier this year the Macphail Homestead, home of Island author and doctor Sir Andrew Macphail, was nearly shut down after financial problems. The province is keeping it open as a historical site for two more years, but after that its future is uncertain.
"This is one area that P.E.I. I think could be doing much more in," said Friends spokesman Harry Baglole of the organic farm plan.

Macphail homestead future looks brighter
Submitted by Chris on Sun, 09/26/2010 - 08:52.The Macphail Homestead's future is looking brighter thanks to provincial and community help. If you have been following the news, the folks running the homestead were having tough times financially, maintaining the buildings and grounds. Although the Macphail woods ecological forestry project is situated on the grounds of the homestead, the two projects are separate, but compliment each other nicely. It is good to hear that the future looks solid for the homestead.
MACPHAIL HOMESTEAD BUILDS ON SUCCESS
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- Islanders are encouraged to consider the historic Macphail Homestead when choosing a venue for fall and winter gatherings, says Tourism and Culture Minister Robert Vessey.
“The Macphail Homestead is an outstanding Island historic site and ecological resource. It is spectacular in the fall and winter and I urge Islanders to continue to use it for special dinners at Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Mr. Vessey.
The minister and area MLA Alan MacIsaac were recently given a guided tour of the site by Macphail Chair Mike Oulton.
“We are pleased to hear that the homestead was busy over the summer months and there are several good fall bookings such as an agricultural symposium on October 7,” said Mr. MacIsaac. “The symposium will focus on research and support for Island farmers, as well as sustainable energy projects for the site including micro-hydro, solar and wind turbines.”

Events Calendar and Children's Program
Welcome back to another season, full of activities, here at the Macphail Woods. The 2010 Events Calendar is available as a PDF (Macphailwoods-Events-2010.pdf)
Three of our week-long summer environmental educational programs are now geared towards a smaller age range, in order for participants to have the best experience possible. While we understand that this may cause a problem for families with children of different ages, our fourth program actually has a wider age range to accommodate those concerns. Topics will include birds, forests, wildflowers, soil, amphibians, water, mammals and a wide variety of nature activities. Activities will take place in the Macphail Woods Nature Centre and make full use of the nursery, trails and waterways.

- THE WEEK OF JULY 19-23: Ages 8-10 years old

About Us
About Us

The Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project is an initiative of the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island. It combines protection of the natural area along the streams with wildlife enhancement, forest stewardship, watershed protection, environmental education and ecological research. The project began in September of 1991 with a wildlife garden and native plant nursery. It includes three nature trails and demonstrations of innovative windbreaks, forest restoration and erosion control. We offer regular workshops on a wide variety of natural history, silvicultural and related topics - birds, wildflowers, mushrooms, pruning, transplanting, papermaking, basketmaking - as well as tours of the property and our work. The nursery and wildlife garden attract special attention, showcasing native trees, shrubs and wildflowers.
The sale of native trees and shrubs from our nursery helps fund many of our other programs at Macphail Woods. Why not come out for a walk or a workshop and pick up some trees for your property? From mid-April to the end of October you can even call us at the nursery (902)651-2575 for information, hours, or a catalogue.
