The Macphail Woods Tree and Shrub Nursery is located in Orwell on the Sir Andrew Macphail Homestead (see map). We grow native trees and shrubs for use in our planting projects and for sale to the public. Native species are usually very reliable, hardy and have adapted to local climactic conditions. They are valuable to wildlife for food and cover, and are useful for stabilizing streambanks, restoring forests and controlling soil erosion. Best of all, native species are easy to grow and quite lovely.
We offer a number of workshops and guided tours at the Macphail Woods Nursery and it is an excellent opportunity to learn more about collecting, propagating, and growing native species of shrubs and trees. Check out the Events Calendar for more information.
2008 Nursery Schedule
* OPEN WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, APRIL 30 to JUNE 7, 9am to 5pm *
From Wednesday, April 30 through Saturday, May 24, we will sell both bare root (as long as the plants haven’t leafed out yet) and potted stock but after that all stock will be potted. Elderberries are only available as potted stock.
After June 7, we are open only by appointment.
**PLEASE NOTE: We are a small nursery and do not ship anywhere**
This year, we are offering a number of broad-leaved trees in the 1 foot up to 8 foot range. Over 10 species to choose from. For example, a 2 foot yellow birch is only $5, or a four footer for only $12. We have a more limited selection of needle-leaved trees species for sale, ranging from 1 foot up to 5 feet. Of course, we continue to offer a large selection of native shrubs at affordable prices. Like a 3 foot red-osier dogwood for $10, or a 2 foot high witch hazel for $10. We also are offering a number of ferns and native wildflowers for sale. This is just a sampling. Make sure to checkout the complete pricelist.
Order early to avoid disappointment. Our stock is growing in height and quantity but supplies are limited for some varieties and sizes.
