Minister's Drinking Water is Safe

January 14, 2008

KINKORA — People landed at the Kanata Club with their own beverages on the weekend.
They hoped to drink without fear.

The Province and Bedeque Bay Environmental Management Association (BBEMA) processed over 400 drinking water samples at a nitrate-testing clinic in Kinkora. It's part of a series across P.E.I.

Canadian drinking water guidelines set the maximum acceptable nitrate level at 10 milligrams/litre.

"Early indications would say that there might be around two per cent of the wells that would be over 10," said Environment Minister George Webster of the results of clinics so far.
Webster, a farmer who lives in nearby Middleton, happily reported his water came in at 5.9 mg/l.

Nitrates naturally occur in the environment, but overabundance can cause groundwater contamination. Common sources in groundwater include decaying plant or animal material, fertilizers, manure and sewage.
