Yet as a treeplanter, woodsworker, naturalist and woodlot owner, I began to feel something was wrong. The clearcut-replant-herbicide cycle was not leading to healthy forests. Books and magazine articles started appearing on ecological methods of forestry. Use of animals to move trees harkens back to earlier time

DUNDAS — Way down along a snow-covered logging road near Dundas, two horses and a sleigh pull three generations of Taylor men through narrow pathways in the woods.
The men pick through a four-acre area of Crown land, choosing dead or crooked trees in the stand for firewood. Their chainsaws mark the only sound of machinery for miles as they slice through the trunks of their handpicked trees.
Damage to trees from ice storm extensive

The ice storm that swept the island last week damaged nearly 70 per cent of trees in the city of Summerside and left enough hanging and broken tree limbs in P.E.I. National Park that the park has had to close some trails.
Trent Williams, horticulturist and arborist for Summerside, told CBC News Wednesday he has been busy surveying the damage.
"Spruce, pine seemed to get hit fairly well, also some of your softer softwoods. Everything from immature … newly planted trees … up to 60-foot, 70-foot mature trees [is damaged]," said Williams.

Thirty-three employees in Georgetown, P.E.I., are out of work following a decision by forestry conglomerate J.D. Irving Ltd. to shut down the province's largest lumber yard indefinitely.
The North American lumber industry has been going through some trying times, and the closure of the Georgetown Timber plant in eastern P.E.I. is unavoidable, J.D. Irving spokeswoman Mary Keith told CBC News Thursday.

The government of P.E.I. has set aside about 800 hectares of Crown land for a sustainable forestry project, with an eye towards harvesting high-value trees instead of knocking down forests for pulp.
