Leaves in Winter

Out at the homestead recently and i was noticing the trees that have retained their leaves throughout this winter. I was particularly struck by the American Beech trees, which look like they still have 50% of their leaves still hanging on. This got me thinking about what other species of trees retain their leaves through the winter.

Along with the beech, the oaks are also good at keeping their leaves in winter. The area around the homestead has a number of english oaks, which are not native to pei, but were planted by sir Andrew. You can see them with their leaves, as well as the Island oak, red oak. I think that may be all.

There are also a number of shrubs that keep their leaves and more importantly, their fruit, well into winter and are an important source of wildlife food during the winter. That's for another post.
