Rising sea levels will have major impact on P.E.I., Ghiz tells leaders
Premier raises concerns at climate change meeting

Rising sea levels and storm surges will have a major impact on Prince Edward Island, Premier Robert Ghiz told Canada’s premiers and territorial leaders who were meeting in Vancouver Tuesday.

Ghiz raised concerns about the future of his island province as Canada’s political leaders discussed the impact of climate change.

In his presentation, Ghiz said the Island is particularly sensitive to climate change. He said rising sea levels and an increase in storm activity, particularly storm surges, will batter an already vulnerable coastline and place more and more low-lying coastal infrastructure at risk, he said.

“It’s going to have a major impact,” Ghiz said in a telephone interview with The Guardian from Vancouver.
“Being a province that’s surrounded by water, rising sea levels can have a detrimental impact on our overall economy.”
