2005 Bird Species list for P.E.I.
The 2005 Year End Report

by David Seeler

Good morning and Happy New year everyone!

It is hard to believe that yet another year has come and gone. The PEIBirders Listserv is now 2 years old and has 101 members from at least 4 provinces. This accomplishment is directly due to the efforts of each and every one of you. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in this endeavour.

At this time PEI had 261 species reported for 2005 up from 249 in 2004, and 236 in 2003. The year started as 2004 ended - A Mew Gull, Brown Thrasher and an Eastern Meadowlark. Every few weeks it seemed that another rarity to Prince Edward Island was reported and Island Birders had the opportunity to view these birds. The Pink-footed Geese returned to Nine Mile Creek after a brief visit to the Mainland affording those who missed them the first time an opportunity to view them. The year continued with Varied Thrush, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher and Fork-tailed Flycatcher being added to the PEI Checklist. Many of the species observed - rarities or otherwise were documented through photographs this year. Our thanks to those who did so. Rehead and Ruddy Ducks appeared in good numbers as the year came to a close and a Cattle Egret joined the list late in the year. The Mew Gull returned to Stratford again in December - perhaps the beginning of a hopefully long relationship with the Island.

This year starts an especially important project! The second Maritime Breeding Bird Survey for the Maritimes will begin in 2006 and continue until 2011. Like the first Atlas Project the success of this project is dependant upon volunteers such as yourself - or those you know who have an interest in birding - or perhaps just an interest in being outdoors. Regardless of the reason WE NEED your help to ensure that the Island is adequately represented in this project.

There will be an Introductory Information session on February 7, 2006 at the Farm Center in Charlottetown. It will be held starting at 6:45 PM just before the regular meeting of the Natural History Society. ALL are welcome even if you may only be able to contribute time during one breeding season. Training Sessions are being developed and will be advertised shortly to those who wish to participate.

If you wish to participate - even if for one year - PLEASE CONTACT me as I am the Provincial Co-ordinator for the project:

David Seeler either by phone (566-0886) or by E-MAil at: Seeler@upei.ca

Again this year, PEI is participating in the Winter Bird List competition with our sister provinces. In the 04/05 season we tallied 123 species. To date we have identified 105 species on PEI. We have until the end of February to best last year's efforts.

Below is the 2005 List of Species observed on PEI. Again - if there are any errors or omissions, please let me know as soon as is possible. Also - forward your Year and Life List totals to me so that they may be incorporated into the report for the next issue of the Island Naturalist.

Today begins another year and a new PEI List. Please report ALL sightings in order that we develop as accurate a list as is possible for the NHS records.

Finally - and perhaps most importantly, may Elaine and I wish each and every one of you and the your families the very best for 2006 and beyond!

Good Birding
David and Elaine
