Birds and Birding 2004 Bird Species list for P.E.I.
by David Seeler
Good Morning everyone!
It is hard to believe that another year is upon us and 2004 is all but a very recent memory. On January 8th, the list-serve will celebrate its fist birthday and I would like to thank each and every one of you for participating in this forum. We have been able to expand the Natural History Society's ability to document reports of avian visitors to our Island AND increase the ability of those who wish to view these visitors in doing so.
Last year started with a new Checklist in hand. The 2003 Edition had expanded some 20 species to the current 353 species. The ABA currently lists PEI as having 333 Species documented with the majority of apparent discrepancies related to the "Hypothetical" species listed in our Checklist.
As I write this, 248 Species were reported to have been observed on Prince Edward Island in 2004 up from the 236 reported in 2003! The 2004 PEI List is attached as a text Document. As far as I am aware, three PEI Birders attained 200 or more species for their Year's List for PEI. One managed to achieve a list of 196 birds by the end of June just missing the stated goal of observing 200 species within 6 months. In addition, Ray Cooke, Eric Marcum and David Seeler established a new Big Day record for PEI (following ABA rules) of 141 Species being observed or heard within a 24 hour period on the 6th of June.
Please send me or Dan McAskill your totals for 2004 and we shall endeavour to place that information along with the year end report in a future issue of the Island Naturalist.
Numerous significant sightings this year kept PEI Birders in a constant state of anticipation. From Glossy Ibis to nesting Common Moorhens at Allisary Creek, to PEI records for three Species of Godwits (Hudsonian, Marbled, and Black-tailed) in one year, it seemed every few weeks another exciting observation was being reported. Even this evening (the 31st of December) a Mew Gull continues to circle the Stratford Lagoons and an Eastern Towhee continues to call North Rustico home. Anyone up for a birding trip this AM?
PEI again this year is participating in the Winter Bird List competition with our sister Provinces. In the 03/04 Season we tallied 114 species. To date this Season we have tallied 99 Species ( the current list is attached as a text document) so far - lots of room for improvement! Remember to send in your sightings and if you can - please participate in the Hillsborough and Montague CBCs.
If you find any errors or omissions in the lists - please let me know!
In Closing, May Elaine and I wish you and your family the very best for 2005 and beyond and to all:
GOOD BIRDING
David and Elaine
